The Great Catch-Up

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1900SPECIAL EDITION · JANUARY 1–10 REPLAY RECORD
The missing dispatches, brought together

The dates stayed put.
The sporting record grew.

Thirty-eight entries from New Year’s Day. Twenty-four football fixtures from one Saturday. A one-wicket cricket finish, twenty-five rounds in Brooklyn and a distance double in Sydney. The catch-up has given the opening ten days a much fuller sporting record.

This edition gathers 83 historical archive additions made after the January 10 league update. Some were newly completed replays; others were earlier results restored to the central record. All retain their recorded event dates. Seventeen previously published historical entries remain alongside them as context.

A note to our readers · how the replay calendar works

Why we went back before moving on

The Universal calendar had reached January 10 while historical research and replay preparation were still filling gaps in the opening days. Some contests needed suitable teams or fighter cards; others needed a field, a draw, period rules or an agreed reconstruction before they could be played. A few completed results also needed to be restored to the shared archive.

We returned to that backlog and published the accepted results against their original fixture, race or continuation dates. Publication day does not become playing day. Root–West belongs to January 9; the January 6 football programme stays on January 6. Adding those reports while the clock reads January 10 does not move the contests onto today’s bill.

These are ASN tabletop replay outcomes. Historical evidence supplies the event context and, where recoverable, participants and conditions. The games supply the replay results. Estimated selections, reconstructed fields, provisional names and uncertain dates remain identified in their full reports; a later publication does not turn an estimate into a documented historical fact.

A multi-day cricket match counts once, even when several calendar entries refer to it. A meeting can contain several separate accepted races. The result ledger below follows those same archive units, so heats, innings, newspaper stories and this special edition do not add extra official events.

Caught up means the playable backlog we chose to tackle has been brought into the record. It does not mean every sporting event in January has been found or every held event has been played. The Universal date remains January 10, 1900.

Football fills the Saturday pages

32 catch-up matches · 24 on January 6

Association football supplied the largest part of the operation. Two January 1 additions, four January 2 fixtures, two January 3 matches and the entire twenty-four-match January 6 programme now have accepted reports.

January 1–3

Derby honours, a reserve double and a Corinthian rout.

Rangers’ 3–1 win over Celtic and Everton Combination’s victory over Sheffield United Reserves completed the New Year additions. Gee scored twice for Everton’s reserves. Bolton’s January 2 clean sheet against Port Vale and Hibernian’s 2–1 victory at Rangers followed.

On January 3, Rangers beat Everton 4–1 with two goals from Hyslop. Corinthian won 8–0 at St Bernard’s, Foster scoring three. These are separate friendly results, not league points carried into another competition.

January 6 · the closing dispatches

A late penalty, twenty-five saves and three for McMaster.

The last three Saturday reports supplied three distinct stories: Hamilton Academical and Abercorn drew 3–3 after Campbell’s 96th-minute penalty; Leith Athletic beat Linthouse 1–0 despite twenty-five saves by Cairns; and McMaster scored three in Port Glasgow Athletic’s 5–1 win over Ayr.

Earlier in the same programme, Bury edged Notts County 4–3, Liverpool won 3–2 at Sunderland and Hearts beat Raith 4–0 with two goals from Walker. Grimsby’s 2–1 victory over Port Vale and Glossop’s 2–2 draw with Preston added further close accounts.

English and Scottish competitions keep separate tables. Scottish Second Division clubs level on points share their placing. Estimated selections and unresolved names stay disclosed; a match observation is not automatically a named career record. The Gazette now contains 39 ASN replays plus 312 historical carry-in matches—the carry-ins are background, not 312 new Universal events.

Philadelphia Jack O’Brien knocked out Al Neill in round twelve. Through eleven scored rounds, one judge favoured Neill 105–103 while the other two had O’Brien ahead, 106–102 and 105–103. The finish settled a divided account.

The fifteen-round replay limit remains an explicit estimate in the report; it is not presented here as a newly verified historical contract.

January 8 · Hercules Athletic Club, Brooklyn

Twenty-five rounds before Strauss gets the verdict.

Isadore “Izzy” Strauss took a majority decision over Matty Matthews: 238–234 and 237–235 for Strauss, with a third card level at 236–236. All three cards had been level after eighteen rounds. Strauss won the final two rounds on every card.

Every one of the twenty-five rounds is available in the published scorecard. The long distance was played through, rather than reduced to a short-form result.

On January 9 at Tattersall’s Pavilion, Jack Root beat Tommy West by unanimous decision over six rounds: 59–55, 60–54 and 58–56. West won the opener by split vote; Root answered in round two and carried the final four rounds on every card.

Sixteen January 1 additions brought back the missing Glasgow, New Orleans, Bagot and Standish results and completed further racing accounts. Silver Coin’s previously published New Orleans handicap win now sits beside Frank McConnell, Magic Light, Sunburst and Uhler from the other four races.

Tabilk won the Bagot and Liberty the Standish. At Randwick, Sirdar led April Fool and The Prize; Reproach headed The Black Rock and Willie in the Perth Cup replay.

Ashburton and Ellerslie

Seven winners at each stop.

Ashburton’s seven accepted flat races went to Nutcracker, Pauline You-are-a-Belle, Rangefinder, Warrington, Actor, Lady’s Chain and Phryne. Completing the parent programme did not create an eighth meeting result.

Ellerslie’s January 2 flat card added Sly Miss, St. Olga, Pitch and Toss, Kissmary, St. Peter, Sant Ilario and Mara. All seven races retain separate reports and their original fixture dates. The steeplechase remains held; it has not been substituted with a flat race.

The full flat-racing archive contains twenty-four accepted races and 214 event-scoped horse entries. Those entries are not 214 newly identified human player profiles.

Canterbury’s eight-race New Year account

January 1 · 84 recorded starts
The Canterbury Cup

Zepha heads the principal race.

Zepha won the Canterbury Cup replay by 5.6 seconds. Royalwood took the Innovation, Skipper the Pony, Lady May the Lincoln, Occidental the Intermediate, The Duke the Telegraph and Silvie Hue the Final.

Elflock [provisional] beat Protest by 0.4 seconds in the Advance, the meeting’s closest recorded winning gap. The provisional name remains marked rather than silently resolved.

Reading the reconstruction

A full meeting, with its qualifications attached.

All eight races and 84 starts are recorded. Historical fields, handicap marks, distances and equipment conditions supplied the starting framework; reconstructed allowances and estimated abilities remain disclosed in each report.

The Intermediate keeps the printed two-mile distance while flagging the conflicting historical time. Recorded replay gaps describe this ASN reconstruction; historical winners and protests were not forced into the finish.

One wicket at Hobart; seventeen runs at Christchurch

Two catch-up matches · counted once each
January 1 continuation · Tasmania–NSW

A hundredth event with one wicket to spare.

New South Wales reached 296 for nine to beat Tasmania by one wicket in the replay that became ASN’s hundredth accepted event. Tasmania made 421 and 179; New South Wales replied with 305 and 296 for nine. HA Evers made 72 in the chase, while BX Colreavy finished unbeaten on 15 and A McBeath on 11.

This replay began from the historical January 1 position of Tasmania 341 for five. The carried opening and subsequent replay innings remain distinguished. January 1 identifies the continuation, not a claim that the match finished that day.

January 4–6 · Canterbury–Otago

Johnston’s 99 gives Otago just enough.

Otago made 105 and 149, then dismissed Canterbury for 60 and 177 to win by seventeen runs. W Johnston scored 99 in Otago’s second innings. AD Downes returned 6 for 12 in Canterbury’s first; AD Eckhoff took 6 for 63 in the chase.

FS Frankish claimed ten wickets for 87 across the match, and LT Cobcroft’s 53 kept Canterbury in contention. This contest began fresh at 0/0. Its January 4, 5 and 6 calendar entries resolve to one completed match, not three victories.

Mrs. M. Day and Mrs. J. Pegler won the women’s two-oar dinghies. Miss Ruth and Miss Garnett took the women’s keel-boats by two lengths, and Miss Day the women’s single-person dinghies by half a length.

D. Gray won the men’s single-person dinghies by a length and a half. The Gray Brothers won the flat-bottom boats by four lengths; Messrs. Pegler [provisional] the settlers’ keel-boats by four and a half. The six results complete those supported races, not every event in the wider regatta programme.

January 1 · Lyttelton swimming

Five events, with the heats kept inside their races.

J. S. Wauchop won the 220-yard Canterbury Championship. F. H. Aynsley took the junior 50, G. Barrell the New Year 50, H. Sherwood the regatta 75 and P. Harvey the Lyttelton club 50. Barrell’s winning gap was one tenth of a second.

Those five accepted events remain distinct from the regatta’s rowing record. Heat qualification and finals are retained within the event reports; they are not extra official wins added to the central total.

Cavill takes the Sydney distance double.

Smith won the January 6 100-yard replay in 1:06.9; Andrews won the plunge with 59 feet 6 inches. Dick Cavill won the January 8 mile in 26:50.0 and the quarter-mile, provisionally dated January 10, in 5:58.5.

The Sydney fields and heat draws include approved estimates. Times and plunge distances are experimental model outputs, not verified historical performances or calibrated all-time records. The quarter-mile’s date remains provisional. January 12’s half-mile and January 13’s 220 yards are future, unplayed events.

What remains open

The playable backlog is caught up.

The calendar still holds 159 scopes for game creation or purchase, including league preparation for unopened games. Historical research remains incomplete. Those holds preserve opportunities for later replay without forcing the Universal clock to wait indefinitely.

Waiheke’s wider programme is not wholly complete; Ellerslie’s steeplechase is held; Sydney’s January 12–13 races remain ahead. No Sunday swimming race has been invented to fill a gap.

The record behind this edition

Replay reports, archive units and reconstruction notes

The result ledger is drawn from the accepted central archive as of this issue. Its catch-up boundary follows the January 10 league update: 64 earlier accepted events, followed by 83 historical additions or restorations. Earlier accepted historical results are explicitly separated from the catch-up batch.

Each linked report retains its source and reconstruction notes. Historical sources establish context; they do not override a recorded replay outcome. No missing scores, player contributions, finishes, quotations or photographs have been invented for this edition.

All four engravings are existing generic ASN period illustrations. Root and West use the historical portraits supplied by Scott, with photograph dates unestablished. No new artwork was generated.
