Alexander Sporting News · Fury Football · Inaugural draft
Thirty Clubs Find Their Sideline Generals
Atlanta draws first. Dallas lands a Bomber. Nashville brings the Twang. A single random draw gives the founding league its first cast of coaches.
The schedule already had dates. Now the sidelines have names. All thirty Fury Football franchises have their first head coaches, assigned by an inaugural random draw that supplied no bidding war, no bargaining table, and no opportunity for a disappointed owner to ask for another dip into the hat.

Draw No. 01
Putt Hubb
Atlanta Gems
The first name out of the hat belongs to Atlanta. Our imagined Hubb arrives with a salesman’s smile and a notebook that looks as though it has survived several arguments. The Gems have their coach; now comes the less convenient matter of winning games.
“First out of the hat is a fine honor. I’d rather be last out of the championship celebration.”

Draw No. 02
Bomber Mortensen
Dallas TNT
Dallas draws second and gets a name that sounds right at home beside TNT. Our portrait gives Mortensen the square-jawed bearing of a man who considers small talk a delay of game. Whatever happens on the field, the press room may need reinforced doors.
“They gave me TNT. I assume they expect a little noise.”

Draw No. 03
Paul Sienna
Nashville Twang
Nashville answers the opening bustle with Paul Sienna. We picture a quieter presence behind round spectacles: a coach willing to let everybody else win the conversation while he studies the next possession. In a league called Fury, a little composure could be a useful luxury.
“A little twang is good. Thirty men shouting at once is just a rehearsal gone wrong.”

A draw, not a coronation
The franchise order and the pool of thirty-one named coaches were shuffled independently. The first thirty pairings became the league’s founding appointments. Each club received one different coach, and the assignments are fixed for the 1900 season.
Atlanta’s place at the top of the board means it was drawn first. It does not make the Gems favorites, and it says nothing about Putt Hubb’s coaching ability. The league has awarded jobs, not trophies. Those will require considerably more perspiration.
The final coach left in the pool is Sedrick Driver. He remains undrafted. Thirty franchises have thirty head coaches; Driver’s next chapter is still unwritten.
Elsewhere around the league
The draw sends Bull Walsh to the Gotham Monoliths and Chill Chellibek to the Atlantic Windjammers. Chicago’s Binge gets Pete Standard, while Philadelphia’s Mongrels land Glare Edwards. The names alone promise a newspaper season with very little shortage of headlines.
But the league’s first immediate comparison lies out west, where two newly appointed coaches already have an opening-day engagement.
The long road starts tomorrow
Thirty clubs will play sixteen regular-season games apiece, eight at home and eight away. The American and National conferences each hold fifteen teams. A 240-game regular season runs from January 2 through April 22.
Six clubs from each conference qualify for the postseason, with the top two seeds receiving first-round byes. Eleven playoff fixtures lead to the inaugural championship on May 20. Every coach now has a team; none yet has a claim on that final afternoon.
The hats are empty. The sidelines are full. Tomorrow, somebody has to coach.
